The Importance of Energy Rating Tests to Maximizing HVAC Efficiency

Energy rating tests are a key component to maxizing the energy efficiency of a new HVAC system installation. 

 

Recently, my travels as a Rheia Territory Manager recently brought me to the DR Horton Greenbrier community in Warsaw, Indiana. Despite the windy and cold weather, we were determined to do the job efficiently. I had the privilege of witnessing Energy Diagnostics conduct a series of tests, including a blower door test, duct leakage test, and a 310 airflow test.

The Rheia duct system exceeded standards for duct leakage, showcasing its exceptional performance in maintaining consistent temperatures throughout the house. This was my first time seeing these tests in person, and I was impressed by the thoroughness and attention to detail by Energy Diagnostics. I am incredibly impressed with the quality of the DR Horton home. It passed all the tests with flying colors!

Like Rheia, Energy Diagnostics is a digitally connected business. Its tablets and smartphones work seamlessly with its testing equipment and back office systems. The air duct leakage, airflow, and duct blaster tests are essential checks conducted to evaluate the efficiency and performance of residential HVAC systems. The air duct leakage test measures the air that leaks from the ductwork in a forced-air heating and cooling system. It helps identify any leaks in the ducts, which can lead to energy loss and reduced system efficiency. In typical duct systems, duct leakage can account for 15% of a home’s energy loss. The test requires all registers to be sealed, enabling the measurement of the airflow rate through the heating or cooling system. It determines if the system is delivering the correct amount of air to each room, ensuring optimal performance and comfort.

I observed the Energy Diagnostics team put the TEC True Flow Meter in action. It is a specialized device that accurately measures airflow through a residential HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) system. This tool is handy for HVAC technicians focused on optimizing the energy efficiency and performance of home heating and cooling systems.

The TrueFlow Flow Meter works by temporarily installing it in place of the HVAC system’s air filter. Once installed, it uses advanced sensor technology to measure the airflow through the system. This measurement can help diagnose system performance issues, verify airflow rates, and ensure the system operates as intended. Accurate airflow measurement is critical for maintaining indoor air quality, achieving optimal energy efficiency, and ensuring that the HVAC system provides comfortable living conditions.

By providing precise airflow measurements, the TrueFlow Flow Meter enables technicians to make informed decisions about necessary adjustments or repairs to the HVAC system. This can include balancing the system to evenly distribute air throughout the home, identifying blockages or leaks in the ductwork, and calibrating the system to ensure it meets the manufacturer’s specifications.

The duct blaster test measures the airtightness of a building’s duct system. It involves sealing off the duct openings and using a calibrated fan to pressurize or depressurize the duct system. By measuring the airflow through the fan, the test can determine the air leakage in the ducts. 

Almost all new homes have an HVAC system, crucial for maintaining indoor air quality and thermal comfort. Besides regulating temperature, HVAC systems filter out pollutants, ensuring clean air indoors. A well-functioning system achieves these goals efficiently, but a faulty one can lead to wasted energy and increased operating costs for the homeowner. These tests are vital for ensuring an HVAC system operates effectively and economically.
